Welcome to Project Ancestry (no name yet) - Devlog 0

hi! my name is Lucas Reis and i'm another full-time dev based on Brazil who is trying his hand at the game dev world yay (part-time anyway because I have to survive 😢)

that ugly face you see above is part of my new project (another project oof) that doesn't have a name yet

i'm calling Project Ancestry for now because, you guess it, it's about ancestry :D

this weird idea came to me out of nowhere in December of the last year, and i thought maybe i could finally work on a game project that actually ships!!! yes, the game dev dream!!

and yep, that's pretty much it, the end

i'm working on this game with two friends (Arthur and Gabriel) programmer and artist and we want to see where this goes

it began with a simple prototype idea

what if I create an ancestry puzzle game in which you need to guess the tree structure of a family just based on their visual characteristics?

and that was it

I was alone in the beginning and I suck at art so that was the first prototype of it

i know, i know, pretty bad, that's how prototypes are supposed to be, right? right?

But after Gabriel entered the project and started doing creating some stuff, that's how it looks right now

Much better hehe and it's even funnier. probably we are going to adopt that comical style and theme

so the idea on this scenario is that you drag these funny faces to the spots on where you think they belong based on their physical appearance and we are going to base a LOT of scenarios on that

when I say a lot, it's a lot, I'll try to work on my level of design skills on this one, let's see how it goes

and we basically created in Godot (yes, we are the one and only open-sourcy engine Godot the Engine), a great workflow to create new scenarios, so right now it's really easy to create

we built an algorithm that it's generating these characters in runtime based on the characteristics of their ancestors (could we already call it a roguelike?)

everything is procedural, so this could have funny appearances and styles, i'll probably do a devlog on this algorithm in the future, it's not something really fancy, but it's giving great results

so if you are interested in that, follow me here or in twitter and you will probably receive an update

we are going to launch a small demo as well with some scenarios so you guys can playtest it for us, yayy

see ya in the future after some crunch time 🥲
